On Memorial Day we pay tribute to the Americans who have given their lives in the wars of our nation.
I was born and raised in the Netherlands and my grandparents were raised during the occupation of the our country. Today, I am especially thankful for the brave American soldiers who fought in World War II.
I can’t image what might have happened to Holland -and Europe in general- if the Americans hadn’t joined the fight to help free our country.
In the Netherlands we hold Memorial Day -officially called Remembrance of the Dead or ‘Dodenherdenking‘- on the 4th of May of each year. We commemorate all civilians and members of the armed forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since the outbreak of World War II. At 20:00, two minutes of silence are observed throughout the Netherlands. Public transport is stopped, as well as all other traffic. Radio and TV only broadcast the Memorial ceremonies from 19.00 until 20.30.
On May 5th we celebrate Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag), to mark the end of the occupation. Our nation was liberated largely by the First Canadian Army, the 1st Polish Armored Division, as well as, American, Belgian, Dutch and Czechoslovak troops. Parts of our country, in particular the south-east, were liberated by the British Second Army, which included American airborne forces.
Wishing you a peaceful and blessed Memorial Day!
