Watch: amazing video of Killer Whales in Laguna Beach! One of the many things I love about Laguna Beach is the amazing variety of wild- and sea life. I have spotted a variety of whales, dolphins and seals in our waters, but I had never seen Orcas near Laguna…
Laguna Beach Resident and SUP enthusiast Richard German says he had been dreaming of getting a close look at orcas. That dream came true recently, as a pod of five Orcas swam around — and even under — German while he stood on his paddle board off of Laguna Beach, Calif.
German got the surprise of a lifetime this past week when he decided to paddle out to a pack of boats off Laguna Beach. It all started when he heard that a pod of Orcas was spotted heading south from Long Beach the day prior. When he saw that a group of boats had gathered a few miles outside Laguna Beach he decided it was worth a shot to see if they were watching the Orcas. Much to his surprise and excitement they were. German notes that he’s paddled right up to many other species of whale before, but never the almighty killer whale. Luckily for us he had a camera on him and was able to make this amazing video!
Rich German: “My dream of seeing Orcas recently came true. Watch as a friendly pod of 5 Orcas interacts with me on my paddle board. This was filmed with my GoPro off the coast of Laguna Beach California last week. You’ll see the whales come directly under my board twice. This was an amazing, magical afternoon.”
Sightings of Orcas are pretty rare in Southern California, but between November and January you might get lucky. Do you want a shot at seeing Killer Whales in real life? Consider taking a Whale Watching tour in Dana Point or Newport Beach. Even if you don’t spot any Orcas, you are still likely to encounter a beautiful variety of sea life including Gray Whales, Seals and Dolphins.
