Are you the proud owner of an historic home in Laguna Beach? You are invited to a workshop by the Heritage Committee on 6/16 to discuss a draft revision in the historic preservation ordinance.
Since the 1920’s, citizens and local government have tried to safeguard the heritage and village-feel of Laguna Beach by providing for the protection of historic resources, and enhancing the visual character of the City by encouraging preservation of unique buildings. The City therefore performed a historic Survey in the 1980’s, identifying over 850 homes and structures within the City with historical or architectural significance which must be preserved.
Today, however, the Historic Resource Inventory is outdated. Residents have been asking for more clarity (sometimes homeowners don’t know their homes are listed on the historical registry until they apply for a permit for home alterations), and a codified process that would allow them to request that their houses be removed from the inventory, noting that being on the list can limit what a homeowner can do with a property.
In the last three years, the City has been working on a revision of the Historic Preservation Ordinance. The revision includes an update to the now 35 year old inventory of homes, as well as an option to request removal from the historic registry, the requirement for real estate agents to disclose a property’s historical rating before transfer of title.
The workshop begins at 6 p.m. in council chambers, 505 Forest Ave. The Planning Commission and City Council will eventually review the ordinance.
