Things to do before you move house

You’re almost done! All that’s left to do is to pack up and move in to your first real home. Here are a few tips that will make your first day as a new homeowner easier.

  1. Sort your belongings.
Moving can be more expensive when you cart along items you don’t really want or need. Plus, a new home means you get a new start. Don’t bring all your clutter from your old house to your new home… Sort and pack our belongings at the same time. Think in terms of three piles – keep, donate, trash.
  2. Properly label your boxes.
Write a short summary of the contents of your boxes. Whether they go to storage, or your new house. It will be way easier to unpack or find specific items.
  3. Plan your storage options.
Closets, attics and cabinets can fill up quickly, especially if you’re downsizing. Where will the out-of-season sports gear go? What about holiday decorations? What goes in the garage?
  4. Plan for Moving Day.
Pack your car with necessities, including first aid, drinks, and snacks. Let each family member choose their favorite items to bring, like blankets, pillows, games, books, and a change of clothes and toiletries just in case.
  5. Transfer your utilities.
Make sure you have all your utilities turned on and set up before you move in.
  6. Do you have young children?
Pack up their toys, bed and play area last. Then make sure its the first thing you unpack when you get to your new house. It will allow them to be with familiar items for as long as possible while you pack up your old house, and it will give them a sense of home as quickly as possible in the new house.
